TAS governance info

Tasmania’s Natural Resource Management (NRM) Framework was established in 2002 alongside the NRM Act 2002 to integrate and coordinate NRM efforts across Tasmania. The Act created three NRM regions and associated Committees or Boards with specific functions, powers, and governance structures while also setting requirements for regional NRM strategies and state priorities.

The NRM Framework aligns with historical national agreements, such as the 1997 Heads of Agreement on Environment and the 2000 COAG NRM Agreement, which established a regional delivery model for funding environmental activities across Australia. This ensures a coordinated approach between federal, state, and regional levels.

NRM governance in Tasmania involves oversight by the Minister responsible for the NRM Act, regional NRM Committees or Boards, and the Department of Natural Resources and Environment Tasmania. The Minister approves regional strategies, appoints regional committee chairs, and monitors performance.

The regional NRM Committees and Boards provide strategic leadership, oversee implementation, and engage stakeholders, reporting annually to the Minister and Parliament.

Tasmanian NRM organisations (NRM South, NRM North, and Cradle Coast NRM) play a critical role in:

  • Setting strategic priorities to protect natural capital and ecosystem services.
  • Developing partnerships and delivering programs through collaborative projects.
  • Providing expert advice on environmental management.
  • Integrating NRM principles across government and private sectors while supporting Tasmania’s environment, sustainability, and resilience.
