Natural Resource Management (NRM) Regions Australia welcomes the confirmation, in Tuesday’s Federal Budget announcement, of ongoing allocation from the Natural Heritage Trust to environmental priorities and sustainable agriculture. This funding decision provides certainty to those who work in the Environment and Natural Resource Management (NRM) sector that the Government is committed to supporting an ongoing vital national program over the next 5 years as the current National Landcare Program comes to its end.

Regional NRM organisations enable on-ground actions that are locally relevant, interconnected, and prioritised. These actions are more likely to endure as they are embedded in communities and integrated with wider values in our landscapes.

It is positive to see these allocations in the budget to fund these programs of work. We now look forward to engaging with the Government and our partners around how they are best delivered”, explained NRM Regions Australia CEO, Dr Kate Andrews.

“We are keen to ensure we can continue to make a difference on the ground, and to bring together actions and investments strategically to benefit the environment, communities, Traditional Owners and farmers across Australia. This next national program will help us do that,” Dr Andrews said. “It is great to see the extended funding for Indigenous Protected Areas, and the fulfilment of that promise.”

Biosecurity is also key to the work of regional NRM organisations, protecting the environment, agricultural industries, and Australians way of life from pests, weeds and diseases. The NRM sector will be engaging to help support the Government’s biosecurity obligations, also flagged in the budget.

The NRM sector is looking forward to working with the Australian Government and partners to design and implement the next national program and the Government’s priorities in the environment and sustainable agriculture.

NRM Regions Australia is the peak body for Australia’s 54 regional Natural resource management organisations.
