Delivery of over 4,000ML of state environmental water to Lakes Powell and Carpul near Robinvale in western Victoria last year has led to “unprecedented” bird breeding. Mallee CMA Board Chair Allison McTaggart said
“Without the environmental water delivery, these lakes would be a completely unsuitable environment for these birds now, as it would be completely dry and desolate. The benefits are huge, and the proof is in the pudding – we’ve never seen bird breeding events or aquatic vegetation thriving quite like this at these sites before.”
Mallee Catchment Management Authority (CMA) recently documented the significant number of birds breeding, including Black Swans, Hoary-headed Grebes, Australasian Darters, and Great and Pied Cormorants and the lack of carp in the lakes.
