Native freshwater fish fights back from extinction

Reintroducing the locally extinct Yarra pygmy perch on Hindmarsh Island

Hills & Fleurieu Landscape Board is working with the Nature Glenelg Trust, the Murraylands and Riverland Landscape Board, private landholders, and other partners to reintroduce the locally extinct Yarra pygmy perch on Hindmarsh Island.

Saved by ecologists after the Millennium Drought, the Yarra pygmy perch have been bred in captivity for the past 16 years, including in private landholders’ surrogate dams.

Using Hills & Fleurieu’s Natural Heritage Trust funding, the collaborative efforts have led to three successful re-introductions of Yarra pygmy perch into their former habitats on Hindmarsh Island. Surveys indicate that the fish are reintegrating into the environment and are set to persist in their natural home.
