After the stimulating morning activities described in Option A, you have the opportunity to head out west to observe the dramatic contrast from the oldest tropical rainforests on Earth, through the wet sclerophyll Eucalypt forests, to the savannah dominated Einasleigh Uplands.
Meet the Ewamian Indigenous rangers at 40 Mile Scrub and discuss projects protecting this threatened Semi-Evergreen Vine Thicket and biodiversity restoration work after the devastating fires of 2019. The group will overnight at Discovery Park’s Undara Lodge in Undara Volcanic National Park before a morning visit to ancient lava tubes with National Parks’ staff. As the trip heads back towards Cairns, the group will visit a climate-smart farm and discuss integrated pest management and chemical free techniques.
Hear how Gulf Savannah’s Priority Places project is protecting and improving habitat for multiple native species, including the Northern Bettong, and how multiple regional NRM organisations are collaborating to protect this species through genetic rescue and fire management.

Biodiversity and Conservation Option A & B field trips begin together leaving Cairns, travelling to Gordonvale, then climbing the Great Dividing Range via the Gilles Highway onto the Atherton Tablelands. After lunch, the two trips split with Option B heading out west to the Einasleigh Uplands staying overnight in Undara Volcanic National Park. On Friday the field trip travels back to Cairns through the Atherton Tablelands and Mareeba agricultural areas and down the Kuranda Range to the coast.
Ongoing long term roadworks on the Kuranda Range may change the return time to Cairns.
