The Climate Smart Gardens project, delivered by Central West Local Land Services (LLS), is an innovative initiative that empowers rural communities to adapt to climate change through sustainable, water-wise gardening. By combining local knowledge with expert horticultural guidance, the project supports climate resilience, biodiversity, and community wellbeing at a grassroots level.
A key event in Armatree in April 2025 engaged residents, landholders, and the local Landcare group in interactive workshops on climate-resilient plants, soil health, and garden design to enhance water efficiency and drought tolerance. The event gave participants practical tools and know-how to encourage lasting changes in their gardening practices.
This project demonstrated strong internal collaboration across LLS teams, including contributions from Cultural Heritage and plant biosecurity staff. This collaboration enhanced project delivery through shared knowledge and coordinated outreach. Evaluation data show increased awareness and adoption of climate-smart gardening practices, stronger local networks, and greater community capacity for ongoing adaptation.
Aligned with NRM goals, Climate Smart Gardens demonstrates how focused initiatives can combine environmental care with community resilience, offering a practical model for climate adaptation in rural Australia.
