Melbourne Water is working collaboratively through the Yarra4Life program to secure a future for the critically endangered lowland Leadbeater’s Possum. Working with partners to understand key roles in the species recovery effort is vital in ensuring that limited resources are targeted to where actions and collaborations can be most effective. Melbourne Water’s position as the Catchment Management Authority/NRM region the unique opportunity to working across private land and supporting a coordinated cross tenure effort. Utilizing modelled and other mapping combined with ground truthing Yarra4Life is considering private land connected to potential future translocation sites and identifying key areas in the landscape with the highest chance to support effective habitat restoration. With less than 1% of the lowland Leadbeater’s Possum habitat remaining, it is crucial that collaborative efforts are sustained and resources are targeted towards actions most likely to succeed.
