Confirming carbon consistency: What does it look like for a carbon farming project to be consistent with a regional NRM plan?

The Carbon Farming Initiative Act 2011 requires carbon farming project proponents to state whether they are consistent with the relevant regional NRM plan. While carbon farming project proponents routinely claim their projects are consistent with the relevant plan, there is little understanding of how they consider the information in the plans, or on the processes they undertake to determine if their project is consistent with the plan.

This workshop will explore the following questions:

• What information about a carbon farming project is needed to determine if it is consistent with a regional NRM plan?
• How are carbon project proponents accessing and using regional NRM plans to inform projects at the moment?
• Do some regional NRM plans have characteristics that make them more or less useful in informing carbon farming projects?
• Can better understanding of consistency claims made by carbon project proponents regarding NRM plans be used to inform the Australian Government’s Nature Repair Market?
