The Riverine Site Maintenance Program in the Mackay Whitsundays, concentrates on continuing maintenance of streambank sites initially rehabilitated through disaster recovery investment following Cyclone Debbie (2017) and the North Queensland Monsoon Trough (2019). In a unique initiative, government funding has been directed specifically toward extended maintenance, marking a significant shift in recognising the long-term support required for successful riverine restoration. This program celebrates proactive government commitment to protecting and prolonging the value of past investments by funding maintenance that strengthens waterway health, boosts resilience to extreme weather, and improves habitat for local species. On-ground outcomes have shown the transition of previous sites, once dominated by weeds, now showing clear signs of natural recruitment and recovery. By improving the health and connectivity of riparian zones, the program has contributed to improved waterway condition and plays an important role in reducing fine sediment export to the Great Barrier Reef.
