Future for carbon & biodiversity on farming country – how can farmers, climate and country benefit?

Carbon farming has been in place for more than a decade and many farmers have benefitted from the sale of carbon credits through carbon forest establishment and savanna burning, among other methods. The market is active and lucrative, with prices for carbon credits rising above $35 recently and sometimes reaching $100 per tonne of CO2-e. Farmers benefit when the returns from credits exceed the costs of establishment, the break-even point. I will demonstrate how this can work, by keeping costs of establishment down to reach a break-even point in just a few years. Carbon credits are funded through offsets against unavoidable emissions or environmental damage. I will touch on the offsets and nature-positive discourse and try to navigate through what can be a touchy issue.
