SWNRM in collaboration with DBCA have identified a site south of Witchcliffe, WA where the white-bellied frog was previously known but has not been calling from in recent years. This site was recognised as a suitable irrigation trial site, with a further two control sites established upstream and downstream of this location.
Through partnership with the Water Corporation, a source of non-potable water was possible with water cartage provided by Shire of Augusta Margaret Rivers Volunteer Bush Fire Brigades.
An irrigation system, carefully interwoven around existing vegetation was installed together with a 23,000L water tank and a submersible water level sensor. Soil moisture probes measuring soil water potential (kPa) activate the irrigation system once soil moisture reaches pre-determined trigger levels or the system can operate on a prescheduled irrigation program. All monitoring equipment has satellite connectivity to allow for real time monitoring -reducing travel and maintenance costs.
