This video showcases the collective impact of the “Assessing the Potential of Saltbush to Sequester Carbon in WA Southwest” project.
Over one million hectares in South West Western Australia are threatened by salinisation. Led by Wheatbelt NRM, in partnership with Murdoch University, Corrigin Farm Improvement Group, and Facey Group, and funded by the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development, the project investigates using saltbush for carbon sequestration on marginal land. By doing so, it supports farmer income, improves environmental health, and addresses autumn feed shortages.
The video features visits to three project sites and interviews with researchers and extension partners, sharing their experiences and insights. One highlight is a 30-year-old saltbush site, where long-term carbon sequestration methodologies in saline environments have been studied.
These stories emphasise the research’s significance in shaping future sustainable land management practices and contributing to Australia’s carbon market opportunities.
