Reading the landscape is important when designing nature-based solutions to complex problems on farms because managing wicked problems in isolation can lead to greater problems elsewhere. A holistic approach involves balancing production with nature so that more than the sum of its parts’ is achievable. I will present examples from farm trials that set out to demonstrate how nature-based solutions such as a chain of ponds and functional biodiversity can address complex problems in paddocks and vineyards. Solutions that have measurable co-benefits using low tech tools and devices that are easily adopted and provide evidence-based data for industry environmental certification.
