Through participation in citizen science activities, students at Tempy Primary School, a small rural school north-west Victoria, have become recognised ambassadors for an iconic local species – the Malleefowl.
Students initially raised concerns about the endangered Malleefowl when they noticed the birds foraging close to busy roads near their homes. This led to a collaboration between the Victorian Malleefowl Recovery Group and Mallee CMA to support an educational project focused on Malleefowl conservation.
As part of the project, Mallee CMA visited the school to discuss the challenges of fragmentation and the importance of habitat connectivity. Students then explored real-world conservation efforts at a revegetation site, gaining hands-on experience. Experience which they continue to develop by supporting local revegetation projects.
