Karst springs project: the journey of wetland restoration

Modification of artificial drains on the property will enable re-inundation of land around the springs

Limestone Coast Landscape Board (LB) in partnership with Burrandies Aboriginal Corporation, South Eastern Water Conservation and Drainage Board, and others is restoring a karst springs-fed wetland – a wetland type listed nationally as a critically endangered ecosystem. The Limestone Coast landscape has less than 3% of the original wetland extent remaining. Modification of artificial drains on the property will enable re-inundation of land around the karst springs, with works expected to be completed in 2028.

The project is located at Eight Mile Creek near Port MacDonnell on a property purchased by Limestone Coast LB in 2023. Funded by the Australian Government, the project will focus on restoring the wetland; providing habitat for wildlife, including threatened species; contributing to water security; and creating new opportunities for First Nations.
