Low methane pastures

Investigating pastures that reduce the methane produced by grazing animals

Central Tablelands LLS is supporting pasture researchers at Cowra Research Station, run by the NSW Government, to investigate pastures that reduce the methane produced by grazing animals as part of an industry push to be carbon neutral by 2030.

The livestock industry contributes 12% to national greenhouse gas emissions, of which 76% comes from grazing animals

Over the past three years, pastures were evaluated for quality, quantity, and anti-methanogenic features with results of between 15-20% reduction while maintaining high protein levels to ensure high growth rates of young livestock. The pasture mixes are now ready to be taken to the animal testing stage of real time measuring of methane production alongside meat productivity.
