What is Soil Health?

Soil health is the capacity of soil to function as a living system. Soil health can vary across different geological conditions, ecosystems and land uses. Soil health can influence elements such as plant and animal productivity, water and air quality and plant and animal health.

Healthy soil maintains a diverse community of soil organisms that support other important services, such as help to control plant disease, insect and weed pests, form beneficial symbiotic associations with plant roots, recycle essential plant nutrients and improve soil structure which can have positive repercussions for water and nutrient holding capacity with flow-on effects to increase crop production (FAO 2008).
