Four program areas will be delivered throughout the three-year project:
Nature-based Solutions (NbS)
Over $190,000 will be shared amongst the local councils to install nature-based methods (green infrastructure) at coastal erosion hotspots for dune stabilisation and management. NbS methods will include sand-trap fencing, matting, brushing and plants, and will invite local community groups to participate in community planting days attached to this work.
Citizen science monitoring
Coastal monitoring will be in the hands of the community, with the installation of CoastSnap stations to obtain long-term data and observe coastal changes overtime. Installation will occur in 2025-26. To see current CoastSnap locations in Perth please visit the Peron Naturalist Partnership website.
Education
Community education will also play a key role, with capacity-building activities and Perth NRM’s Adopt A Beach Program delivered annually, supported by a total budget of $45,000 over three years. Events will include an annual Coastal Forum for volunteers and stakeholders to share their projects and knowledge and Coastal Erosion Tours, inviting community to learn more about the management actions taking place at erosion hotspot locations.
Aboriginal engagement
Aboriginal engagement is a priority, to connect people to the cultural values of the coast and incorporate Indigenous knowledge on coastal resilience. Perth NRM will work with local Aboriginal-owned businesses and Traditional Owners to develop cultural events and opportunities themed on coastal and marine sciences.
Communication materials, such as video series, will be developed to increase awareness of coastal risks, to create stronger, more resilient coastal communities prepared for future environmental challenges.
