The Circular North program is a regional initiative hosted by NRM North, bringing together the region’s eight local councils to progress towards a circular economy in northern Tasmania.
Through support from the Tasmanian Government and funding from the statewide waste levy, Circular North provides advice, funding and education to better manage waste and recycling within local communities, businesses and local governments.
Key projects of the program include the annual distribution of Resource Recovery and Circular Economy Grants to schools, small businesses and community groups, the celebration of grassroots waste initiatives at the biennial Waste NoT Awards, increased recycling hubs throughout the region, and funding regular collections and safe disposal of household hazardous waste. Northern Tasmanians have embraced the household hazardous waste collection campaigns, wIth the total weight collected growing with each campaign.
Since May 2024, the program has recovered over 14 tonnes of household hazardous waste, such as herbicides and pesticides, pool chemicals, flammable liquids and aerosols. This waste, if sent to landfill or disposed of incorrectly, could pose a risk to health, wildlife and the environment.
Funded by the Tasmanian Government and supported by the Tasmanian Waste and Resource Recovery Board.
