The Grazing for Healthy Rivers and Sawfish Conservation project aims to protect and restore habitat for the threatened Largetooth Sawfish (Pristis pristis) by supporting sustainable grazing practices on priority properties. Strategic riparian fencing and off-stream watering points will be installed to manage access to waterways, reduce erosion, and improve the condition of riparian zones.
These actions will enhance critical sawfish habitat, particularly important nursery areas. In addition, annual sawfish surveys will collect key information on population size, age structure, and genetic diversity to help assess regional population stability.
Working in partnership with landholders and key stakeholders, the project aims to improve river health, protect sawfish habitat, and strengthen local stewardship of river systems.
This project is funded by the Australian Government Natural Heritage Trust and delivered by Southern Gulf NRM, a member of the Commonwealth Regional Delivery Partners panel.
