Green connections

The Wet Tropics is one of the most biologically diverse regions on Earth and the only place globally where two World Heritage Areas—the Wet Tropics Rainforest and the Great Barrier Reef—interconnect.

While often thought of as a single continuous forest, the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area is fragmented by roads, rail lines, and agricultural development. Reconnecting and buffering these forest patches is essential to strengthen ecosystem resilience, support biodiversity, and ensure the long-term health of this globally significant landscape.

Terrain NRM is leading a collaborative effort, partnering with over 30 organisations to coordinate restoration across the region. Through support to willing landholders in 11 priority wildlife corridors, their programs enable:

• Revegetation of degraded areas
• Weed management to restore native ecosystems
• Voluntary conservation agreements to protect habitat on private land

This coordinated approach is restoring critical habitat, enhancing connectivity, and generating measurable environmental and social outcomes—demonstrating how targeted investment in landscape-scale restoration delivers lasting impact.
