Mapping for regional resilience: bushfire preparedness workshops empower primary producer communities

  • Context: Regional

Ahead of the 2025 bushfire season, Healthy Land & Water delivered a week-long series of five Property Fire Management Planning workshops in partnership with the Department of Primary Industries and Rural Solutions Queensland, spanning from Monto in the North Burnett to Dalveen in the Southern Downs.

The workshops engaged 84 primary producer landholders, resulting in fire management plans for 82 properties covering a combined 33,519 hectares.

Beyond the planning outcomes, the workshops fostered genuine community connection — participants valued the opportunity to learn from one another and from fire practitioners, with increased understanding of cool and mosaic burning techniques reported as a key outcome.

The program demonstrates how collaborative, place-based engagement transforms fire planning from a compliance exercise into a meaningful, community-owned strategy for long-term landscape resilience.
