Revised mapping guides next steps for koala habitat restoration priorities

  • Context: Regional

Healthy Land & Water’s Restore & Reconnect Program has revised the SEQ Areas of Regional Koala Significance (ARKS) mapping to better direct habitat restoration for South East Queensland’s endangered koalas.

The updated 2025 SEQ ARKS mapping identified 22 ARKS, 160 habitat nodes, and 194 habitat connecting buffers across the region, incorporating local stakeholder datasets to prioritise areas of greatest conservation impact.

Working in collaboration with all SEQ local government authorities, the program will deliver over 32 hectares of strategic revegetation, up to 600 hectares of intensive weed control, ecological burns, and removal of over 4,200 metres of old fencing. Each action is monitored to measure ecological improvements and koala population responses.

This data-driven, regionally coordinated approach directly supports the Queensland Government’s SEQ Koala Conservation Strategy 2020–2025 and its goal of achieving a net gain in koala habitat.
