Saving Native Species – Southern Pink underwing Moth

  • Context: Regional

The endangered Southern Pink Underwing Moth (Phyllodes imperialis smithersi) is found only in small pockets of lowland rainforest in South East Queensland and northern New South Wales, relying entirely on the Carronia vine to complete its life cycle.

Funded by the Australian Government’s Saving Native Species Program, Healthy Land & Water is delivering targeted on-ground conservation in collaboration with Barung Landcare and Watergum, including strategic weed control across 15 hectares of subtropical habitat, revegetation of 3 hectares with locally native rainforest species, propagation of approximately 2,000 Carronia vines, and identification of 15 priority habitat areas across the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast hinterlands.

Alongside this program, a community planting day held in October 2025 brought together Healthy Land & Water, Barung Landcare, Sunshine Coast Council, and volunteers to plant over 500 native tubestock in a single morning in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland, directly contributing to habitat restoration for this remarkable and rarely seen species.
