The Australian Government’s $6 million Wild Otways Initiative fundamentally transformed conservation outcomes across the region, shifting from fragmented efforts to a unified, landscape‑scale approach.
Over three years, the program brought together Corangamite CMA, Parks Victoria, DEECA, Traditional Owners, researchers and local communities to restore habitat, control pests and strengthen biodiversity. It delivered extensive on‑ground works including habitat restoration, feral animal control, dieback management and small mammal recovery.
The impact was striking. Coordinated trapping, monitoring and landholder engagement reduced feral pig numbers by more than 95% in targeted areas, dramatically improving habitat condition and reducing erosion and disease risk. Community participation surged through grants that enabled over 11,000 metres of fencing, 91,000 plants and 215 events involving more than 3,000 people.
By 2023, the Otways had a stronger, more connected conservation network and a lasting blueprint for threatened species recovery.
This project was funded by the Australian Government.
“The impact of the Wild Otways Initiative will extend far beyond its three‑year duration. It will serve as a model for responsible management and set the stage for future endeavours in this region.”
