The Goulburn Broken Indigenous Seedbank has operated since 2001 within the Goulburn Broken catchment of Victoria, on Yorta Yorta and Taungurung Country.
Managed by Euroa Arboretum since 2019, the Seedbank plays a pivotal role for meeting increasing seed demand, ethical seed harvesting, and respecting Traditional Owners and the lands from which seeds are harvested.
Large-scale revegetation requires substantial quantities of genetically diverse seeds. However, diverse native seeds are rare and valuable. The supply of wild seeds is constrained by seasonal variations and ripening; and collection, cleaning, and processing are labour-intensive tasks.
Investment in seed coordination, including the establishment of seed orchards or Seed Production Areas (SPAs) and a collaborative network of seedbank facilities, is crucial for securing a robust indigenous seed supply for the future. This presentation will explore potential pathways for achieving this goal.
