Submission to the Royal Commission into National Natural Disaster Arrangements

Dr Kate Andrews, NRM Regions Australia
Published: May 12th, 2020

The 2019-20 wildfires represented a significant turning point in national consciousness and policy around rising bushfire risk in the face of climate change. The Australian Government took on a significant role, working with States and Territories to coordinate efforts and deliver funding for the recovery of environment and natural resources, including through NRM regional organisations. The Royal Commission into Natonal Natural Disaster Arrangements provided an opportunity to review this response and set a direction for the evolving national arrangements in the face of growing climate extremes. This NRM RA submission highlights the wide-ranging roles played by NRM organisations in bushfire recovery and emergency response, the signficance of NRM regional planning, and opportunities for strengthening the bushfire recovery response through integrating NRM into emergency preparedness and response systems.
