Opportunities for Federal investment

Australia faces more challenges than ever before – with climate change, biodiversity loss, and land degradation – all damaging our economy, lifestyle and environment.

Australia’s regional Natural Resource Management (NRM) organisations are working on the ground to address these challenges and to create opportunities for regional Australia.

With greater investment they can help build the resilience of our communities, economies and environment to face these challenges. The regional NRM sector provides an essential service.

NRM is ready to do more

Regional NRM organisations are making a profound difference to the ongoing survival, productivity and sustainability of Australia’s natural and farming landscapes. We can do more.

Increased funding is more vital than ever, particularly in the face of extreme events. Yet Federal funding for our organisations’ core work has been declining.

A scale-up in funding would deliver greater results on the ground across Australia.

Investing to scale up regional NRM core services with $280 million p.a. for ten years, through the Natural Heritage Trust, will allow regional NRM organisations across Australia to:

  • boost outcomes to protect nature and restore habitat on public and private land;
  • improve sustainable agriculture practices;
  • help communities build resilience and adapt to climate change;
  • improve water quality in rivers, wetlands and coasts; and
  • control pest plants and animals that impact biodiversity and agriculture.

What can be done

Invest to scale up regional NRM essential core services to $280 million p.a. for ten years

Enduring annual funding of $280 million per year for 10 years through the Natural Heritage Trust will allow regional NRM organisations across Australia to boost effort to protect nature and restore habitat on public and private land; improve sustainable agriculture practices; help communities build resilience and adapt to climate change; improve water quality in rivers, wetlands and coasts; and control pest plants and animals that impact biodiversity and agriculture.
