The Mallee bird community of the Murray-Darling Depression bioregion is a threatened ecological community identified in the Australian Government’s Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act). It includes 20 bird species that rely on mallee habitats and 10 of these species are individually classified as threatened in South Australia while 6 of these species are individually threatened in Australia.
Habitat clearing, fragmentation and degradation have had significant negative affect on these birds as well as direct threats from feral predators, extreme weather events and a changing climate.
The Murraylands and Riverland Landscape Board is working with partners to to conserve and enhance the mallee bird community through many activities including: monitoring bird populations, restoring habitat, removing direct threats and championing the conservation and restoration of the Mallee bird community.
This project is funded by the Australian Government Natural Heritage Trust and delivered by the Murraylands and Riverland Landscape Board, a member of the Commonwealth Regional Delivery Partners panel.
