The Murraylands and Riverland Landscape Board works with the community to protect and enhance natural ecosystems and agricultural lands. It covers land from the Victorian and New South Wales borders to the western Mallee, and from the Rangelands in the north to the southern Mallee and Murray Mouth. The region is part of the Murray-Darling catchment and includes the South Australian portion of the Murray River, supporting agriculture, tourism, recreation, and vital water supplies for Adelaide and other towns.
The region is home to one of South Australia’s most productive agricultural areas, with the Murray River playing a critical role in supporting horticultural industries.
There’s more than 13,000 hectares of wetlands and floodplains, including 3 Ramsar sites.
The region includes Mallee landscapes, which are home to unique ecosystems, and threatened species such as the regent parrot and the black-eared miner.
We partner with industry and farming groups to improve soil health, build resilience, and manage pests. We promote on-farm biodiversity, demonstrate erosion control practices, and support land managers in addressing climate risks. We also focus on pest management through early detection to boost biosecurity, helping to create sustainable farming systems.
We work with farmers, communities, and First Nations to promote sustainable water use for agriculture, industry, and the environment. We manage water resources through developing plans and policies, and partner with the irrigation industry and government to optimise water use for farming, environmental, and cultural needs.
We manage environmental water to support wetland and floodplain ecosystems and improve watercourses for ecological health. We protect threatened and culturally significant species, manage grazing pressure, and enhance revegetation efforts to build climate-resilient landscapes.
We recognise that people are at the heart of landscape management. Our region’s people bring knowledge, inspiration, and diverse motivations to their connection with the landscapes they live and work in. We collaborate with First Nations to protect cultural values, foster youth participation and leadership, and support volunteers and community groups in achieving shared environmental outcomes.
The region includes the lands and waters of First Nations groups including Ngarrindjeri, the First Peoples of the River Murray and Mallee Region, Peramangk, Ngadjuri, and Wilyakali.
