Livelihoods and land and soil health are at risk following low rainfall in South Australia, particularly in the Mallee and Murraylands areas. However, Murraylands and Riverland Landscape Board has partnered with the Landscape Priority Fund, SA Drought Hub, and Mallee Sustainable Farming to deliver four demonstration sites on farms affected by soil drift over the past two seasons.
The project aims to explore and showcase innovative land management techniques and provide agency to landholders facing tough times. It will explore three key areas: trialling soil stabilisation using a range of erosion risk management approaches; farming system recovery through better informed decision-making for lentil production; and a framework for management and prevention of soil loss that will utilise advanced warning and early intervention technology from satellite imagery with soil agronomy decision-making platforms to support decision making for cropping and livestock management.
