The news many of us have been waiting for- the National Biosecurity Committee has announced the outcome of the National Established Weed Priorities (NEWP) prioritisation process. Fourteen national established weed priorities were agreed, including African lovegrass, Amazon frogbit, Sea spurge, Calotrope to Wandering trad.
Consensus was not reached for Buffel grass (Cenchrus ciliaris) with the National Biosecurity Committee undertaking further work before making a final decision. The Committee acknowledged that Buffel grass presents a unique and complex case because it is both highly valued as a pasture grass and causing significant negative environmental and cultural impacts.
We thank the Committee for their commitment to working through the difficult issues with determining the new weed priorities. We hope these listings lead to better outcomes on the ground for our native species and communities.
