Wheatbelt Natural Resource Management (WNRM) is a not-for-profit organisation that leads positive change in Natural Resource Management through the creation of respectful partnerships, innovation and community action. The organisation operates from its Northam office, Western Australia.
We work with individuals and groups to protect land, flora and fauna and develop sustainable agricultural systems.
No matter who you are nor where you’re from, we welcome and encourage you to get involved.
Working with landholders and Wheatbelt community to protect and manage biodiversity in the Avon River Basin. Supporting ground management activities to conserve threatened species and ecological communities; and conducts educational workshops that promote awareness of the environmental issues faced in the region. Projects have a strong focus to increase Indigenous participation in project delivery and monitoring. Key areas of focus include revegetation and protecting priority waterways, remnant bushland; and managing breeding areas for threatened species.
The Sustainable Agriculture program supports landholders to explore, trial, adopt and measure the success of sustainable agricultural land use practices. Driven by community and stakeholder consultation, the program builds resilient and profitable farming systems by improving soil health for greater productivity, restoring unproductive landscapes to productive grazing systems, and reducing feral species.
With a longstanding history of connection between Wheatbelt NRM and the Noongar Ballardong people, the Aboriginal NRM team continues to further develop a connection to Boodjar that has been fundamental for the Noongar people since the time of dreaming. Employing the Noongar Boodja Ranger Team, engaging a Noongar Elders Advisory Group and providing resources to our community on cultural heritage and Noongar Language.
Traditional Custodian groups: Ballardong, Nyaki-Nyaki, Wiilman, Kalaamaya, Wajuk
A skilled workforce of locally Noongar men and women that continue to grow their employment base of work on Boodjar that adheres to and promotes traditional culture to the community. Rangers are trained across multiple skill sets including safety, operating equipment, native seed collection, weed control and plant identification. This helps Rangers engage in projects that connect them to Boodjar and empowers each of them to carry skillsets and confidence into other areas of their lives. This work has been effective in managing natural resources in the area.
