The Building a Climate Smart Ag Future for the Riverina project focuses on practical, on‑ground solutions to support sustainable agriculture. It aims to boost farmer confidence, encourage innovation, and strengthen community engagement, particularly among women and university students, in areas such as carbon emissions, environmental markets, and efficient agricultural practices.

The project addresses key threats to agriculture in the Riverina region, including pest animals, poor land management practices, knowledge gaps affecting farm decisions, natural disasters, and the impacts of climate change—especially shifting rainfall patterns.

This project is supported by the Australian Government through funding from the Natural Heritage Trust under the Climate-Smart Agriculture Program.

Project delivery focuses on a range of engagement, training, and demonstration activities, including:

  • On‑farm demonstrations across key supply chains (e.g., red meat, grains, oilseeds, horticulture).
  • Workshops on carbon calculations, sustainable farming, and climate‑smart practices.
  • Training and refresher courses on grazing, soil health, and reducing livestock emissions.
  • Farmer discussion groups for peer learning.
  • Education events for women and university students.
  • A supply chain conference focused on reducing emissions.
  • Distribution of educational materials and development of a practitioner network for ongoing knowledge sharing.
