OceanWatch have been working in partnership with the NSW oyster industry to transition the industry to a more resilient and sustainable business model by tackling one of the sector’s biggest post-flood challenges: management of discarded oyster farming infrastructure and shell waste.
The project was developed in response to industry losses of $17 million from stock loss, infrastructure destruction and environmental degradation following flood events in 2021.
Jointly funded by the Australian and NSW governments, the feasibility study identified cost-effective recycling solutions; statewide estuary clean-up events to recover lost infrastructure and debris; and trials of recycling options for oyster gear and shells.
The development of this Feasibility Study was supported through joint funding by the Australian and NSW Government’s Storm and Flood Industry Recovery Program.
“This journey will require the continued investment by government at least in the short to medium term to facilitate a focus on the topic. A not-for-profit like OceanWatch Australia offers trusted, community-rooted leadership, bringing practical industry insight, neutrality, and long-term commitment—making it uniquely positioned to deliver circular economy solutions that stick.”
