K’gari Galangoor Gira Ngulungbara Djaa (K’gari Good Fire Northern Country)

Cultural fire practices led by Traditional Owners present a holistic approach to ecosystem management – a nature-based solution (NbS) – that delivers benefits for nature and biodiversity while mitigating bushfire risks. 

The K’gari Galangoor Gira Ngulungbara Djaa (K’gari Good Fire Northern Country) project, led by Burnett Mary Regional Group in partnership with the Butchulla Aboriginal Corporation, extends cultural burning practices to new areas of K’gari, including Wallum heathland, and continues long-term ecological and cultural monitoring. This work is First Nations-led and will enhance the “Good Fire Handbook”, and provide employment and capacity-building for Butchulla fire practitioners. 

This project aims to strengthen cultural resilience, protect local ecosystems and infrastructure, and foster collaboration through stakeholder involvement, education, and strategic communication.

This project is a trial under the Nature-led Resilience project which is being delivered in collaboration with NRM Regions Australia with the support of the Minderoo Foundation. Find out more about the Nature-led Resilience Program here.

This project will extend cultural burning practices to new vegetation types on K’Gari, and in doing this will enable expansion and refinement of the “Good Fire Handbook”—an operational guide developed by Butchulla fire practitioners and BMRG.

BMRG will also do monitoring and evaluation work across cultural burning sites, to assess the ecological, socio-economic, cultural, and disaster mitigation benefits of this NbS. This evaluation includes social surveys and information exchange with the K’Gari community to understand perspectives around fire management.

This project will contribute to the understanding of how NbS can reduce wildfire risk to protect local infrastructure, properties, and culturally significant sites and improve community safety and resilience.
