‘Walking the Landscape’ with locals leads to better water quality and Reef Credits scheme
The Wet Tropics Major Integrated Project to improve water quality of runoff reaching the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) has succeeded by gathering hundreds of ideas from the community and local organisations. Building upon these ideas, Terrain NRM walked the landscape with local landholders to strengthen their partnerships and ensure the plan was fit-for-purpose. The result is a distillation of five key actions applied across the landscape, tight collaborative partnerships across the region, and the development of the new Reef Credits scheme that generates a tradeable unit for preventing nutrients and sediment from entering the GBR catchment.
