In good news for farm animals and the environment, the Harrisia cactus education project delivered by North West Local Land Services (LLS) has been extended for another year. Harrisia cacti have sharp spines that can seriously injure people and animals and form impenetrable thickets which outcompete native plants and pastures, restrict movement of livestock, and provide habitat for pest animals like rabbits.
Over the next year, North West LLS will host 12 ‘Cacti Catch Ups’ spread across the Gwydir and Moree Plains Local Government areas. Funded by the NSW Government, the sessions will focus on awareness and education, including informing landholders of their responsibilities under the North West Strategic Weed Management Plan and their general biosecurity duty.
