Community comes together at Tilapia Takedown

Works to improve waterway connectivity fosters a more diverse and abundant native fish population

Over 175 enthusiastic young anglers, including kids and teens, participated in the Tilapia Takedown event at the Mackay Gooseponds in November.

The community-driven effort to tackle invasive species was organised by OHT Tackle Shop with support from Reef Catchments, MAFSA, Mudskippa and others. The results were promising with four tilapia caught and no Jaguar cichlids. Several native species, including sleepy cod, barramundi, and catfish, were reeled in—a testament to the improved health of the Gooseponds ecosystem.

Work to improve connectivity through fish ladders and better management of upstream catchments, such as reducing water quality runoff, are fostering a more diverse and abundant native fish population, making it harder for pest species to thrive.
