Sharp Rush attack will help to restore saltmarsh

Protecting a key player in coast resilience and biodiversity

Recently, Northern Agricultural Catchment Council (NACC) teamed up with KMAC Botanical and Environmental Services, volunteers from the Jurien Bay Regional Herbarium Group, and Rangers from the Shire of Dandaragan to remove invasive Sharp Rush. The event was part of ongoing weed management at the Hill River estuary and part of the ‘Improving Subtropical & Temperate Coastal Saltmarsh’ project funded through the Australian Government Natural Heritage Trust.

Sharp Rush can quickly outcompete native vegetation due to its prolific seed production and alters the fragile coastal saltmarsh ecosystem – a Threatened Ecological Community. Healthy saltmarsh supports a wealth of native species, filters waterways, stabilises riverbanks, and stores carbon, making it a key player in coastal resilience and biodiversity.
