Torres Strait Regional Authority (TSRA) rangers have raced to prevent the spread of cane toads on Saibai Island after a cane toad was captured on the island’s wharf. The TSRA Rangers alerted the community, are running night patrols and have increased their cane toad monitoring schedule including using eDNA kits for early detection of cane toads and other invasive species, like the invasive Snakehead fish.
While cane toads have been detected in the remote Torres Strait Islands since the early 2000s, they are yet to become established in the outer islands. The invasive toads pose a risk to numerous native and culturally significant species including the crocodile, frilled-neck lizard, goanna (Australian varanids), great egret and Papuan black snake.
