The two-year Beyond Barriers Coastal Wetland Rehabilitation project has made a big difference for fish passage and wetland recovery across the Mackay and Isaac regions. Reef Catchments worked with the Mackay and Isaac Shire Councils, Department of Local Government Water, the Koinjmal People / Koinmerburra Aboriginal Corporation, the Yuwibarra / Yuwi Aboriginal Corporation, and local landholders on the project construct the nursery step fishway at Carmila Creek Gauging Weir and restore Mackay’s Wetland Walkabout.
The project also strengthened the ecological health of the Great Barrier Reef catchments by improving water quality and demonstrated the impact of targeted, collaborative restoration.
