Building resilient landscapes in the Swan region: Carnaby’s Black Cockatoos

Preventing further population decline by improving breeding success, expanding habitat, and managing key threats

A whole-of-lifecycle approach to sustain populations of the Carnaby’s Black Cockatoo has been adopted by Perth NRM. Funded by the Australian Government Natural Heritage Trust, the ‘Building resilient landscapes in the Swan region: Carnaby’s Black Cockatoo’ project aims to prevent further population decline by improving breeding success, expanding habitat, and managing key threats such as the loss of nesting and food trees through land clearing and fire.

Using advanced mapping (MCAS-S), Perth NRM has identified high-priority roosting areas across local government areas that will be the focus for weed control, revegetation, and the planting of “Carnaby’s Cafés” – native food trees within a 4–6 km radius of known roosts – with schools and community workshops to turn backyards and local spaces into mini-habitats.
