Western Local Land Services (LLS) are working with landholders and local Aboriginal communities to improve the habitat condition for the endangered Mallee Birds Community – an assemblage of 20 bird species that rely on mallee habitats. These include malleefowl, striated grasswren and the red‐lored whistler. Key threats to the ecological community include the loss of habitat, wildfires, grazing pressure, pest animals and invasive weeds.
Funded by the Australian Government Natural Heritage Trust the project aims to restore and improve foraging and breeding habitat and increase the Mallee Bird Community population numbers. Project works completed recently include direct seeding of Mallee bird habitat, pest animal control of rabbits to reduce grazing pressure on the newly established seedlings, and control of foxes and feral cats to reduce predation of the bird community.
