Funded by the Western Australian Government, South Coast NRM are working with citizen scientists, Indigenous rangers and community groups to measure and monitor Southern Right Whale demographics along West Australia’s south coast from Albany to Hopetoun.
The network of trained observers collects key biological information through photo surveys to understand the whales’ calving habits, choice of habitats and migration routes — critical knowledge for informing the protection of the species from the key threats of vessel strike, noise and marine pollution, and climate change.
