As part of OceanWatch Australia’s Whale Entanglement Mitigation Program, a short film has been released showcasing how fishers and conservationists are working together to reduce whale entanglement risks while keeping fisheries safe and sustainable.
The film highlights the challenge to the commercial fishing and trapping industry from increasing Humpback whale populations as they recover from past commercial whaling. Higher whale populations increase the potential for interactions between whales and commercial fishing operations, and the film showcases the innovation and commitment of fisheries to reduce entanglement with whales through collaboration and practical, on‑water gear trials.
