Water management strategies for dry times

Leading a coordinated, forward-looking response to prolonged drought in the region.

Wimmera CMA is working with GWM Water, municipal councils, Traditional Owners and communities to lead a coordinated, forward-looking response to prolonged drought in the Wimmera region. Initiatives combine infrastructure innovation, adaptive water management and strong partnerships to safeguard critical environmental, cultural and community assets.

In the past 12 months, Wimmera CMA has completed planning of pipeline watering points in lower and upper reaches of key Wimmera waterways. The planning includes construction of pipeline connections and integration of recycled water for agricultural research, community green-space reserves and emerging industries.

Environmental water allocations, although limited by diminished inflows, are key to waterway health in the Wimmera. Domestic pipeline supply that reduces water-loss will be used to maintain drought-refuge pools to protect ecological values and increase wildlife resilience until inflows increase.
