South West NRM is currently working with Badgebup Rangers and the National Malleefowl Recovery Group in a five-year project funded under the Australian Government’s Natural Heritage Trust, to improve outcomes for the culturally significant ground-dwelling malleefowl in the Tarin Rock Nature Reserve.

The Badgebup Rangers recently ground-truthed data collected from a Lidar (Light Detection and Ranging) survey that measured data points to create 3D models to identify likely malleefowl mounds and located 3 active mounds in the process.

South West NRM will monitor mound activity to assist in building local malleefowl data and are engaging with local farmers to restore the natural habitat of the malleefowl to support their long-term persistence.
